Zip line at Oney's Farm

One of the leaders of the Troop during the early 1970's owned a farm near Meeker, OK, where we went camping frequently, his last name is Oney, so we referred to this camping location as "Oney's Farm". This farm had a wide variety of terrain which included a grass meadow area, wooded areas, and a large hill in the middle. Strung across the valley from a very large tree on the top of the hill down to another very large tree at the bottom of the grass meadow was a steel cable zip line. This zip line was probably 1,000 yards in length and at a 20% incline. Attached to the zip line were rollers to which you could tie a rope and suspend yourself. I can remember rolling down that zip line and across the valley onto the grass meadow at speeds of at least 40mph with no helmet, pads, or protection of any kind. When you got to the bottom the only way to stop was to try to "ski" across the grass on your feet. Most of the time you tripped and crashed at the end. Typically you were only able to ride the zip line once or twice during the campout because of the time required to recover from your injuries from the last ride, but everyone still stood in line to take their turn.
