Staged Motorcycle Accident

From Troop552

On one of our monthly campouts, sometime around 1971, the troop leaders staged a mass motorcycle accident. On Friday night about 08:00 PM, as we were walking to our campsites in the dark, we had to walk through a ravine. When we reached the bottom of the ravine, there were about 10 to 15 people laying in the bottom of the ravine with their motorcycles they were riding. They appeared to be bloody, injured and unconscience, except for the strong smell of ketchup used to simulate the blood. The scouts immediately recognized it as a staged event and did not provide assistance to the persons simulating injuries. The scout leaders then announced it was an exercise and we were to treat it as real and render first aid to the injured.

This required everything we knew about first aid from shoulder slings, ankle braces, broken bone splints, head wounds, carrying the injured out to a location where they could be transported, etc. All of this was before we had even setup camp, so we were still carrying our backpacks, campboxes, tools and such when we came across this event.

After we had finished the staged accident, we then had to setup camp, so we were very busy that friday night and worked late into the night to get our camps established. Dfrench 23:28, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
