Knot Tying

From Troop552

I was allowed to join Troop 552 at age 10 (instead of 11) in September of 1969 because my 11th birthday was in November. My first campout with the troop was that month (September) and I had no idea what to expect. One of the planned activites on Saturday during the campout was to have a knot tying contest. Anyone who was able to tie all 8 standard knots in less than two (2) minutes, was allowed to shoot a pistol. They had several pistols and you were allowed to select the pistol you wanted to shoot.

Being a 10 year old, there was of course nothing more I wanted on this planet than to shoot a pistol. Again, this is my first campout and I had never heard of these knots, much less tried to tie them all in two minutes. I spent about an hour practicing the knots and went to the scout leader who was judging the knot tying, and I tied them on the first attempt.

I selected a .38 caliber pistol and was given 5 shots. I knew at that moment I was going to be doing a lot of camping with this troop. Dfrench 22:15, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
