Camping with Gypsies

In 1972, on one of the monthly campouts with the troop, we went to Red Rock Canyon. Also camping/living at the campground was a family of Gypsies. And when I say gypsies, I mean straight out of the book, sterotypical gypsies. They wore the gypsy clothes, the gypsy hats, the gypsy jewery, a large tent home, everything that you imagine a gypsy would be, was this family. They also had a beautiful daughter about 13 years old, about the same age as all the boys in the troop. Everyone recognized immediately this had the potential to be a whole lot of trouble. Several of the older boys in the troop attempted to gain the young girls attention, one did, I forgot who it was. Several of the men in the troop spent the rest of the campout, day and night, taking turns following these two around to make sure nothing happened. Fortunately nothing did, or there may have been gunfire. I remember at the Saturday night campfire, the troop invited the gypsy family to join in, where the patrol responsible for building the campfile, had a problem getting it lit. Finally the gypsy father got a propane tank with a large nozzle on the end of it. This had the effect of turning the propane tank into a flame thrower and he lit the fire with it. But it was a bit embarrassing, a boy scout troop that couldn't lite a fire. Dfrench 03:38, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
